Are Probiotics important for your health?

Probiotics are everywhere! We are being flooded with ad’s about probiotic’s. The question is do you need it and if so how do I pick a good one?

I was having a conversation with a waitress at a Diner the other day about probiotics. She asked me my opinion on it because I recommended it to her a few weeks ago.

She’s been suffering from continuous sinus and upper resperitory infections in spite of having had an operation to fix it. I had told her several weeks ago to get a good probiotic because the health of our body is in our gut.

The reason why probiotics are everywhere is because research is showing us more and more how important a healthy gut is. Our diets are compromised of so much processed food our guts are suffering because of it. And in return so is our health.

With all of the media advertising probiotics it creates confusion as to what you should buy. I want to explain the following questions to you to help you better understand what you should be looking for.

  1. Why should I have a probiotic?

You should have a probiotic in your daily diet because, probiotics help

  • support our immune system
  • allergy sufferers
  • us get our minerals from our food
  • us digest our food
  • Gives us vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, A & K
  • creates Intestinal micro flora

They also help with

  • irritable bowel
  • urinary trac infections
  • kidney stones
  • colitis
  • cancer

So as you can see there are so many reasons to start taking a probiotic. The problem is there are so many out there which one do you choose? If your wondering why there are so many the simple answer is, money. When things get popular everyone want’s to make money off of it. As long as you know what to look for you’ll be getting a good probiotic that’s beneficial to you.

Besides taking a supplement there are also good probiotic foods you should be incorporating into your diet.

Here are some good probiotic foods you should be eating:

  • Yogurt
  • Kefir
  • Kimchi
  • Miso
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Kombucha

These foods are filled with good probiotics that will help flood you gut with good flora. The reason they’re good is because their fermented and filled with good bacteria from the fermentation process.

Now on to finding a good supplement.

What’s a good brand? What should I be looking for and why? Let me answer these questions for you.

I want to make sure your getting your monies worth. There are certain things you want to look for on the box of the probiotic supplement.

Look for this:

  • Pick one that has at least 7 different strains of organisms – different strains have different functions

Dr. David Williams recommends you to have the following strains in your supplement.

L.acidophilus, B. longum, B. bifidum, L.fermentum, L. rhamnosus

  • you want atleast 2 billion bacteria per serving
  • non-gmo brand
  • look for one that explains the potency at time of expiration
  • expiration date- this is the manufacturers promise that bacteria in the product will remain potent & active
  • Look for a money back guarantee
  • Make sure it contains live active cultures
  • look for dairy, gluten & soy free
  • make sure it doesn’t contain sugar
