The importance of Self Care

Self care is important for you and those around you.

Last month I was at an event for holistic practitioners. The speaker was an MD turned holistic who had studied with Dr. Andrew Weil. After his inspiring talk was over, he opened the floor up for Q & A. I asked him what I needed to do to make my business grow. His answer was something I’ve never been told before when it comes to business.

be easy!” He said,  “No, I mean self -care”. Take care of yourself and your business will thrive. Wow!! That was not advise anyone in business had ever given me before. Self- care so my business would grow. I’ve been meditating on that for a while.

I went to the same group a month later and that same message came to me, but I was asking a different question.

At these meetings, we get time to talk and get to know each other. This month, they threw us a curve ball and handed all of us a “gift”. The gift was a card that said “everyday we make a small change in the world, what change are you making in the world?” We had to find a person in the room we didn’t know and ask what he or she would do every day to change the world. 

Our talk led to a discussion about my daughter who is dating a boy I’m not thrilled about at all.  As I asked for some advice on what I should do, the same advice came up as it did the previous month. Self- care! He said you need to be there for your daughter and ask her how you can support her. However, in order to be there for someone else you must first take care of yourself. He went on to say that if my own cup was only a quarter or half way full it wouldn’t be enough to give someone else what they fully needed.

So now my question to myself is, “what does self- care really look like for me?”

A couple of years ago self-care would have been shopping at the mall, drinking, hanging out with people and gossiping for hours. Now, for me self- care is about being still, resting, nourishing my body & asking myself “what do I need at this very moment?”.

This core message keeps coming to me. I always believe that when you continue to hear something over and over it’s simply life’s way of speaking to you, sending subtle messages so we do the work that needs to be done.

Self- care means something different to everyone.  As a mom of 4 self-care is something I lack in life. I try as hard as possible to make it happen, but I’m busy with the kids, my business, friends, cooking, cleaning, my relationship & just working on myself. Then again, even that needs a break sometimes!

To me, self-care is about slowing down and just asking myself on a constant basis what do you need to do right now to take care of yourself? Sometimes, it’s something as simple as I need a glass of water. Sometimes, it’s as big as I need a day at the spa. Other times I need to just curl up on the couch with my lovable 4 year old and watch Disney movies. This past weekend I went to my friends house in the woods and enjoyed the sun while lounging on her hammock. 

Self care does not need to be expensive or cost anything at all. It can be a mindful walk in the park, a bubble bath, a nap or watching a good movie that makes you feel fantastic. 

Find out what self care means to you and begin implementing it into your life. You cannot fill someone else’s cup if yours is half empty. Self care is a gift not only for yourself, but also for others.
